چکیده

Purpose – The aim of this paper is to suggest a method to redesign business processes from the viewpoint of knowledge flows using a knowledge map. Design/methodology/approach – Knowledge flows and business processes cannot be separated because knowledge is inputted and outputted through business processes. Knowledge flows inherit the feature and appearance of corresponding business processes; therefore, one can identify problems within business processes by analyzing corresponding knowledge flows. The methodology is composed of the following sections: knowledge mapping, knowledge profiling, knowledge flow identification, knowledge flow optimization and TO-BE process visualization. Findings – This paper provides a methodology for knowledge flow-based business process redesign and ten guidelines for knowledge flow optimization. The case study demonstrates that the proposed ideas constitute knowledge-intensified business processes. Research limitations/implications – A more formal validation method that is based on the statistical analysis must be provided to assert the proposed guidelines for knowledge flow optimization as the truly optimized ones. Practical implications – This paper’s idea provides the practical methodology and guidelines that can be directly applicable to performing business process redesign by introducing a real case. Originality/value – This paper’s ideas not only provide present companies with a practical way to enhance their business process to be more knowledge-focused, but also promote the current economy to be more knowledge-intensive.

Case-Based Reasoning as a Technique for Knowledge Management in Business Process Redesign

Business Process Redesign (BPR) helps rethinking a process in order to enhance its performance. Practitioners have been developing methodologies to support BPR implementation. However, most methodologies lack actual guidance on deriving a process design threatening the success of BPR. In this paper, we suggest the use of a case-based reasoning technique (CBR) to support solving new problems by ...

Redesigning Reengineering Through Measurement-Driven Inference

KOPeR is developed to automate three key intellectual activities required for process redesign--process measurement, pathology diagnosis, and transformation matching. This KBS tool is used in the laboratory to redesign a commercial process from the reengineering literature and then employed in the field to redesign operational procurement processes in the context of an "industrial strength" ree...

Changing the Focus of Business Process Redesign from Activity Flows to Information Flows

Current business process redesign practices, in the defense sector as well as in business in general, are based on several assumptions inherited from Taylor’s scientific management method, including the key assumption that activity-flow representations should provide the basis for business process redesign. While this assumption was probably correct for most organizations in the early 1900s, it...

Business Process Redesign at a Mental Healthcare Institute:

Business Process Redesign aims to radically improve the performance of business processes. One of the approaches to derive such an improved process design is an evolutionary approach, making use of redesign heuristics (Reijers, 2003). Simulation of the redesigned business process comes into play if one has to decide whether the redesign is better than the previous process design, or if one need...

Information technology infrastructure, organizational process redesign, and business value: An empirical analysis

a r t i c l e i n f o We extend current research examining synergies between information technology, process redesign, and firm performance in three ways: analyze a firm's entire IT and BPR portfolio, examine production and market value performance implications, and conduct analysis using a unique dataset of 228 firms between 1996 and 1999. We find a contingent association between IT, process r...
